Travel insurance – what to check

The important details are in the policy terms. Use this checklist to understand what you have and which questions to ask before travelling.

First check

Are you already covered?

Review annual, workplace, membership and card-based cover before buying anything new.

Read the terms

Six things worth checking

01

Who is covered?

Check whether the policy covers only you, the household or specific family members—and whether everyone must share the same address.

02

Where does it apply?

Read which countries, trip lengths and types of travel are included. Business trips, extended stays and certain regions may have separate conditions.

03

Illness and treatment

Review cover for sudden illness, medical treatment, repatriation and excesses. Information about pre-existing conditions may be important.

04

Cancellation

Check which documented events may qualify, the maximum amount covered and when the policy must be active.

05

Luggage and delays

Check limits for baggage, valuables and essential purchases after a delay. Keep receipts and report losses promptly.

06

Activities and rental cars

Skiing, diving, motorsport and other activities may be restricted. Travel insurance also does not automatically replace necessary rental car cover.

If something happens

Documentation makes a claim easier

  • ✓Contact emergency assistance for serious incidents
  • ✓Request a written report for theft or loss
  • ✓Keep receipts and confirmations
  • ✓Document delays with the transport provider
  • ✓Follow policy deadlines and procedures
  • ✓Do not commit to unapproved major expenses
Note: This is general information, not personal insurance advice. Your own policy terms and information from your insurer apply.

Frequently asked questions

In brief

Do I already have travel insurance through my payment card?

Possibly, but conditions vary. A specified portion of the trip may need to be paid with the card. Check the cover, limits and eligible travellers.

Is the European Health Insurance Card enough in Europe?

The card can provide access to necessary state healthcare on local terms in participating countries, but it does not cover everything travel insurance may cover, such as repatriation and cancellation.

When should I contact the insurer?

For serious illness, major expenses, theft or repatriation, contact the emergency assistance service as early as possible and follow the policy instructions.
